Frank Somers is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. He first got his start in high school as a drummer. By the early 1980’s, Frank had picked up the guitar and started writing songs. Over time he taught himself to play bass, keys and as he says, “a bit of everything.” Throughout his career he has worked with a number of artists and bands. In 2016 Somers launched a solo project by releasing “Venus Has Aligned With the Sun,” the first in a trilogy of concept albums.
In 2019 Frank Somers followed that debut with the second entry in the trilogy, “Sundown Journey.” The music of the singer’s youth is the common thread running through the three albums, tying together his deeply held philosophical, religious and political views. With a sound that harkens back to the forefathers of Alternative Rock, the singer delves into some heady material. His songs range in subject matter from Christian history and theology to astrological themes and interpersonal relationships both good and bad. All the while he pays homage to his heroes like; The Stranglers, The Smiths, Pink Floyd and punk legends The Clash.
In the coming weeks Frank Somers will release the third and final record in the collection, “From the Darkest to the Brightest Star.” Although the new album is not yet available, Frank was kind enough to share a handful of tracks from the record with The Static Dive. Once again, he pairs catchy guitar-based Alt/Rock and Alt/Pop grooves with his distinctive political and religious narratives.
Tracks like “Just For Fun” and “Star Spangled Skies” combine 80’s New Wave and 90’s Alternative influences with keen Pop sensibilities and deep theological discussion. Elsewhere the songwriter veers into more conventional subject matter, as on the upbeat love song “Never Let You Go.” On his new material, Frank Somers is joined by a crack Rock & Roll ensemble. In addition to the songwriter himself, the band includes; Iain Morrison (keyboard, banjo, producer), Andrew Howie (bass, mastering and mixing) Barry McDermid (guitar, backing vocals) and Niamh Dillon (keyboard/piano).
