We first heard from HeIsTheArtist in March of this year upon the release of his single “Virgin.” Also known as Christian Neo-Soul singer, songwriter and producer Leemann Bassey, the Long Island native has made a career of creating innovative and thought provoking multi-genre experiments. Although his early work was more secular in nature, the singer changed directions after experiencing an epiphany. Moved by the words of a particularly powerful sermon, he redirected his creative energies toward his Christian faith.
HeIsTheArtist’’s music has reached like minded fans in multiple countries. His single “Boom” has charted on numerous Christian/Gospel charts in around the world, evening reaching #1 in South Africa. Since the release of his single “Virgin” the multi-talented creator has delivered the six track EP “The Book of Mary.” That record has had a similar global impact with each track counting its streaming numbers in the tens of thousands.
“What Did I Do?” is the latest single from “The Book of Mary,” released worldwide to all major streaming services on August 13, 2021 as the double single “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Once again we find HeIsTheArtist experimenting with multiple genres. The track opens on a dramatic minor-key guitar and vocal intro. Soon a Hip-hop bass and drum beat enters the mix, combining a modern Trap groove with old-school breakbeat sub-rhythms. Meanwhile, the singer delivers a vocal meditation on the song’s title set to an operatic melody with Middle Eastern vibes.
