Jay Smoove is the professional name of emerging Hip-Hop artist Jayden Jorden. The Chicago rapper made his recording debut earlier this year, and in just a few short months he has already amassed a remarkable volume of work. With six singles and an EP under his belt, the prolific young emcee has made an impact with fans around the world. His songs currently count their spins in the hundreds of thousands across multiple streaming platforms. Although he is new on the scene, music has been a mainstay in Jay’s life. As he was growing up, R&B, Hip-hop and House music were in constant rotation in the Jordan household.
“Melancholy” is the latest single from Jay Smoove, released worldwide to all major streaming services on September 9, 2021. The song opens on a sample of a somber Classical string quartet. Soon an old-school Hip-hop beat drops and Jay Smoove enters the mix with a dark narrative of depression and self doubt. The song takes a hard look at the rapper’s own shortcomings, ranging from drug use to mental health issues. Jay is a skilled emcee and applies a literary lyrical style to make his point, at one point even referencing 18th Century poet and philosopher Thomas Gray. It’s a great sound, mixing complex subject matter with a smooth downtempo groove.
