Hando Aguilar first appeared on The Static Dive in September upon the release of his album “Make it Up As You Go.” That record introduced us to an enigmatic singer, songwriter and producer from Northern California with a unique style and a deeply introspective approach to songwriting. A remarkably prolific artist, Hando has produced 7 full length albums, 5 EPs and a handful of singles since his solo debut in 2020.
Since the advent of home recording, visionary DIY creators have been breaking the rules of popular music and creating experimental sounds unavailable in any other arena. Hando Aguilar is from this great tradition, making intensely personal music that defies easy classification. His latest record is an excellent example of his style and vision.
“Nothing New ” is the brand new EP from Hando Aguilar, released worldwide to all major streaming services on October 26, 2021. Through the course of the six song collection the singer explores themes of substance abuse and mental illness. Musically the record is a mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation with a distinctly lo-fi aesthetic.
The record opens on the song “Shaking.” Hando Aguilar sits alone with his guitar and delivers a stream of consciousness meditation on the effects of drugs and alcohol. As the record progresses he introduces a more electronic sound. “Ain’t New” features a funky acoustic guitar riff paired with retro synths and minimalist percussion. The mostly instrumental, haunting ambient electronic “Don’t Make Momma Mad” follows.
For the final three tracks of the EP, he returns to an acoustic singer/songwriter arrangement. However, he peppers the songs with subtle synth pads and some intentional white noise distortion. The tracks ruminate on regret, renewal and the effects of anxiety. It is a fascinating and immersive listen. Hando pulls us into his world.
