Balkun Brothers are back with a brand new five song EP of psychedelic jams and Blues-fueled Rock & Roll chaos. Regular readers of The Static Dive will remember the band from their fantastic 2020 album “Here Comes The End of the World.” That record introduced the sibling duo of Steve (guitar) and Nick ‘The Hammer’ Balkun (drums). With just that two man crew, they deliver an epic Rock thunder.
“Paris Penthouse Party ” is the new EP from Balkun Brothers, released worldwide to all major streaming services on December 3, 2021. Recorded at an intimate basement recording studio in Paris during a four night stop on their 2019 tour, the record features four originals and one smoking cover. The duo’s sound is always very live and has a great improv energy. On the new EP, that live vibe is on fire.
The record opens with the low seismic rumbles of “Nova Super.” Before long the track blows up into the signature Balkun Brothers mix Sabbath-worthy riffs and tripped-out Acid Rock. As it progresses the song continues to build momentum. Try not to bang your head through the last two minutes of double-kick drum insanity. Next, the band does Gen X proud with their high-octane, funked up and raw cover of “Guerilla Radio” by the legendary Rage Against the Machine.
The Balkun brothers follow that defiant anthem with the Funk/Rock jam “Fonk Schwee.” Here and throughout the record we are hearing two gifted musicians with the familiarity of fraternity, having a lot of fun. They pack all of the psychedelic soul of Jimi Hendrix and the P-Funk groove of George Clinton into a track with the Prog Rock complexity of a Rush song.
The duo goes even deeper into Jimi territory with the Band of Gypsys-style, jazzed-up Blues-rocker, “I Need Love.” They throw a healthy dose of Led Zeppelin into that mix for good measure. The record closes on “Spiders On My Head,” a wild Horror/Sci-fi ride through Punk choruses, Reggae grooves and Psychedelic Rock improvisation. The song is seven and a half minutes of indulgent Rock fun. Great stuff.
To accompany the EP, Balkun Brothers have released a new ‘making-of’ documentary video. Check out the record and the film below.
