Elliot Wren Drops High Anxiety Time Bomb

elliot wren

We first heard from Elliot Wren in August upon the release of the sweet Indie Folk/Pop love song, “Girl in the Flower Patch.” That track introduced readers of The Static Dive to a talented young singer/songwriter who was making waves in the Boston music scene and beyond long before their 2020 recording debut. In 2019 Elliot performed in over 40 cities on the “All You Got Tour,” which features performers aged 24 and under. That same year they performed live as part of their hometown’s legendary First Night celebration.

A non-binary artist, Elliot Wren seeks to inspire others in the LGBTQ+ community to face their fears and find happiness. Leading by example, Wren’s lyrics tackle complex gender issues head-on, along with all of the emotional and societal baggage that comes with the territory. On their latest release, they take that message into a whole new musical arena.

“Time Bomb” is the latest single from Elliot Wren, released worldwide to all major streaming services on December 17, 2021. On the new track, Elliot has departed from their familiar Pop moods for an edgier Rock vibe. Through the opening verse we find the singer alone with a solo electric guitar for a bluesy, Southern Rock feel. We hear an internal dialog between the singer and their own conscience. The latter doles out dubious and self destructive advice like, “Don’t talk too loud, don’t ever let them see.”

In the chorus the track takes on a grungy Indie Rock edge. The band joins in as the guitarist steps on a distortion pedal and Elliot sings of being a time bomb, “waiting to implode.” It’s a dark and honest look at the compounding anxiety created by societal pressure to act “normal.” The song’s excellent angsty, 90’s Alternative vibe is exactly the right vehicle for the message.
