We first heard from Essa V in September of 2020 upon the release of the single “Better Online.” That track introduced the world to a multifaceted artist with a unique Alt-Pop vision. The Austin-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer creates genre-defying sound. The singer cites groundbreaking artists like Blood Orange, Bladee, Charli XCX and Dorian Electra as inspiration.
“Another Life” is the debut EP from Essa V, released worldwide to all major streaming services on February 22, 2022. The collection showcases the broad range of both musical style and emotional depth that the artist brings to the table. The four songs on the EP catalog a series of relationships that have changed the artist.
“When You Dream Your Soul Grows Back” opens the set. After a rocking guitar intro the track kicks into an upbeat House groove. Essa V delivers a metaphysical Disco jam as she asks, “Do you know how it feels to know yourself?” The soulful Dark Pop relationship post-mortem of “Fossil” follows. As the song progresses Essa V dives deep into some Christine & The Queens-style experimental rhythmic vocal harmonies.
“Better Online” introduces a nice dose of 80’s Electro-Pop and Synthwave. You can read all about that song and watch the video here. The EP closes on the smokey Jazz vibe of “Radio Silence.” Electric piano chords ride a minimalist beat as lush vocal harmonies and ambient synths float in to expand the horizon. As that dreamy scene plays out, Essa V delivers a softly soulful and somber story of love’s broken communication.
