We first heard from Dave Vargo in October of last year. The New Jersey singer, songwriter and guitarist had just released his single ‘Fault Lines‘. The song introduced readers of The Static Dive to a veteran stage and studio session musician who has worked with legends like Whitney Houston and Phoebe Snow.
A poetic and bluesy road song, “Fault Lines” was a sneak peek at Dave Vargo’s forthcoming third full length solo album, Crooked Miles. The wait is almost over. The 12-track collection will drop everywhere, to all major streaming services on Friday May 6, 2022.
In advance of the release, the singer has made three more tracks available via his SoundCloud page. By all indications, fans of Dave Vargo’s award-winning mix of storytelling Folk and Singer/songwriter Rock have a lot to look forward to. The set finds Vargo on solid Americana ground, though he very comfortably slides one foot or the other into Country or Rock & Roll territory when the mood suits the song.
Throughout the record Dave Vargo is accompanied by an ace band in a classic Nashville ensemble of guitars (acoustic, electric and steel), bass, drums and keys. On “Best Version” the combo takes on an Alt/Pop/Rock vibe with a subtle Country lean. The sound brings to mind classic College Rock bands like The Call and The Alarm. In the chorus, the introspective existential tune takes on a lush Pop sheen with a 70’s feel.
“You’ll Know” leans a bit more in the Country/Pop direction. The melancholy and wistful ballad is a great example of Dave Vargo’s soulful and visual songwriting style. “Nobody’s Fault” rides an upbeat Country/Rock beat that recalls X’s later material and John Doe’s solo stuff. Vargo knows when to drop a hook and brings a great one to the song’s radio-ready chorus.
