Monty and the Kraken is the professional name of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer, Gavin Montgomery. Regular readers of The Static Dive will remember the multi-talented creator from his 2020 debut EP Release the Kraken.
That record introduced an eclectic and deeply talented musician who mixes elements of hip-hop, r&b, rock, EDM and pop into his own distinctly soulful vibe. Since that debut, the prolific producer has been working on not one, but two brand new albums. The records Eternal and Bondfire will be released in the next two months. Monty recently dropped a brand new single in advance of Eternal‘s release record’s release.
“Free” is the brand new single from Monty & The Kraken, released worldwide to all major streaming services on June 6, 2022. Ambient sounds of nature and the city open the track as a jazzy bass and guitar duo introduce a mellow, melancholy melody. The beat drops on a downtempo hip-hop shuffle as Monty steps to the mic with a philosophical mediation on personal responsibility and finding the courage to pursue one’s dreams in a challenging world. It’s an emotional r&b slow jam anthem for those ready to break free from the mundanity and pursue the life of their dreams, rather than the one that was chosen for them.
