Gordon Thomas Ward – Whispers From The Woods

Gordon Thomas Ward is a veteran singer, songwriter and accomplished guitarist. The Winter Harbor, Maine native has spent the better part of recent decades touring coffee shops and festivals throughout the Northeast. Along the way he has also amassed a sizable catalog of blues, country and classic rock-infused original folk music.

Regular readers of The Static Dive will remember Gordon Thomas Ward from his award-winning 2020 album, Eiderdown. That record introduced us to a skilled and seasoned storyteller with a sound built on masterful songwriting and expert musicality. His songs are examinations of both the individual and collective human condition. He tells his tales through personal observations, poetic allegories and somber societal critiques.

“Whispers from the Woods” is the brand new album from Gordon Thomas Ward, released worldwide via all major streaming services on September 1, 2022. Recorded in the artist’s own Frog Hollow Studios, the twelve song collection matches Ward’s intimate narratives with a star-studded ensemble of folky virtuosos. From the epic poem and jazz infused folk of the opening title track to the melancholy piano ballad “Evening Bell”, Gordon examines our inseparable connections to nature and each other.

Throughout the album, Gordon Thomas Ward is joined by a parade of fabulously talented musicians. Contributions from the likes of dobroist Abbie Gardner and guitarist Jud Caswell create a beautiful americana home for wistful remembrances (“The Gift”, “There was a Time”) heartbroken soliloquies (“Push”) and even a Neil Young style rocker (“Secondhand”).

Lyrically, Gordon Thomas Ward blurs the line between the personal, spiritual and political. In his hands, they are all just pieces to the puzzle of being human. Life is full of questions and Gordon does not pretend to know all the answers. He’s just there with us, trying to figure it out. However, he does offer a bit of guidance on “The 2nd Floor”, a folk-pop number sung from the perspective of the man upstairs.
