We first heard from Anonymous17 in May of last year upon the release of her debut EP Hand Held With Rough Edges. That record introduced The Static Dive readers to an emerging independent singer, songwriter, and recording artist with an eclectic genre-bending pop vibe. Now the teenage musician and her songwriting partner/producer Chip Altholz have returned with their sophomore release.
Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Anonymous17 first started singing in grade school. She and Chip made their first trip to the studio three years ago and have been working together ever since. Her new record is the second of three planned consecutive annual releases. Seeking no accolades for herself, she has chosen to remain anonymous, wanting only to share her vision and innate optimism through her music.
Anonymous17 II is the brand new EP, released worldwide via all major streaming services on October 2, 2024. The six-song collection continues her exploration of retro-pop hooks, funk grooves, and ethereal vibes. The young singer has an unorthodox approach to recording, singing barefoot and always using a handheld microphone.
From the opening synthwave arpeggios of “Move” to the disco energy of “Be Love Give Love”, on the new record the team spins dance grooves, analog synths, funky bass lines into a unique & dreamy soundscape. On the mic, Anonymous17 delivers soulful leads, heartfelt lyrics, and lush multi-part harmonies. She maneuvers her impressive skill through the genre-fluid set.
“Goodnight” is an upbeat 80s-inspired pop jam featuring some groovy slap bass and island vibes. “In Your Way” slows things down for a melancholy and cinematic love ballad. “Stay” then drops the beat on a breakup pop drama with even more funky bass-driven energy. “You Had to be Perfect” offers a bit more heartbreak drama before “Be Love Give Love” closes the set with a big disco-infused electro-pop anthem.
