Sweet Crystal has been entertaining the greater Detroit area and beyond with their Progressive Christian Rock vibe for more than forty years. The award-winning band have earned 24 Detroit Music Awards in the Outstanding Gospel/Christian categories. Their records have connected with hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.
The quartet features founders MarQ Speck (lead vocals, keyboards), Bill Blatter (guitar, vocals) and Steve Wieser (drums) and their newest member Martin Kuchar on bass. Regular readers of The Static Dive will remember the band from their recent single releases “The Other Side of Cavalry” and “Angel My Love.” Both songs were precursors to the release of the band’s brand new album.
“7th Heaven” is the latest album from Sweet Crystal, released worldwide to all major streaming services to all major streaming services on February 14, 2022. In addition to the obvious biblical reference, the album’s title is a play on the fact that it is both the group’s seventh release and the fact that it contains seven tracks within.
The synth-fueled, Styx-inspired inspirational Prog Rock track “The Other Side of Calvary” opens the set and introduces the anthemic Sweet Crystal sound. The band follows that emotional cinematic piece with a powerful rendition of “Let The Day Begin.” The song is a cover of the 1989 classic by The Call and the beautiful mind of the late great Michael Been.
“When I Tell You I Love You” is a moving ballad about love and faith. “Soldiers of the Crown” mixes things up musically with a combination of electronic and acoustic percussion before the choral vocals and ambient synths create a dramatic backdrop for Speck’s emotional testimony. Guest vocalist Peggy Turner-Carr and Gospel star David Winans II both shine on “Heaven’s Call.”
Winans returns to join Sweet Crystal and guest vocalist David Perez as they deliver a moving rendition of his song “Angel My Love.” The record comes full circle with the closing track “Checkmate.” Originally written and recorded by legendary Detroit band SCR, the track takes the album back to the 70’s art-rock vibe of the opening track.
