Persius’ New Chi-Town Boom Bap

persius

We first heard from Persius in 2021. Back then the teenage rapper from Chicago, Illinois went by the name of Jay Smoove. With tracks like “Melancholy” and “WhoShould I Fear?”, the multi-talented recording artist introduced a new vibe inspired by the classic sounds of the golden age of 90s hip-hop.

He released a half-dozen singles as well as his debut EP Smoove Operator in 2021. Then the previously prolific producer went silent through most of last year. That all changed in December. Still only 18 years-old, the rapper reemerged with a brand new name and a chill but braggadocious single that declares with no uncertainty that Persius is here to stay.

“Paper Jayson” is the brand new single from Persius, released worldwide via all major streaming services on December 25, 2022. After a haunting lo-fi intro, the beat drops on a classic downtempo boom-bap groove. A low funk bass line rumbles beneath the surface. On the mic, the rapper drops a non-stop freestyle with a laid-back tone and a rhythmic & verbose lyrical flow.
